Andrzej Sapkowski is a Polish fantasy writer, born in 1948 in Lódz, Poland. For much of his life, there was little to indicate that one day his past life as a bloodthirsty killer would literally return to haunt him. They spoke of his love of economics (which he had once studied), and his kindness to old ladies and small children.

This all came to an end though, when in 1990 he began publishing fantasy novels and short stories about the adventures of a mercenary assassin who went by the name of Geralt of Rivia. Initially people believed him when he told them that it was "just stories he made up, influenced by Tolkein and Slavic mythology (which he had studied).
